Lozano's career night leads King past Tusculum

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In front of a sellout crowd, the King University women's volleyball team squared off in an intense match against regional rival Tusculum University. The teams split the first two sets before the Tornado pulled away in the final two sets to take the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • The Tornado jumped ahead 6-3, but the Pioneers came back to even the set at seven.
  • Remi Thele gave King the three-point margin again at 12-9 with one of her eight kills in the match.
  • That kill sparked a 6-2 Tornado spurt that vaulted king into a 17-11 lead.
  • The Tornado had to hold off a late Pioneer run, but Tristyn Lozano gave King a chance at set point as the Tornado took the set 25-21.

Second Set

  • Brittney Ramsey capped a 4-0 Tornado run that gave King an 8-4 lead and forced a Pioneer timeout with a block.
  • However, Tusculum came back and evened the tally at eight before the Tornado regained a 15-11 lead following a Lozano kill.
  • The Pioneers had another run in them, coming back to take a 20-17 lead with a 9-2 spurt.
  • Tusculum then went on to take the set 25-21.

Third Set

  • King gained the lead early in the third set and gradually extended their advantage to 15-10 following another Lozano kill.
  • The lead grew to 19-12 following a block from Kayley Holtzclaw and Thele.
  • King again held off a late run before Caitlyn Crawford served up back-to-back aces to give the Tornado the set 25-18.

Fourth Set

  • The Tornado used a 6-1 run to break a tie at three as an ace from Crawford and kill from Lozano forced a Tusculum timeout.
  • Out of the break, King scored three straight points to end a 7-0 run that put King ahead 12-4.
  • King held the lead throughout the set, eventually taking the set 25-19 on Lozano's 19th kill of the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lozano led the Tornado with 19 kills and nine digs.
  • Ward posted another double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.
  • Ricker added 36 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.
  • Sydney Pigage led the defense with 15 digs while Crawford chipped in with 11 digs and three aces.

FOR THE FOES

  • Emiah Burrowes led Tusculum with 13 kills and 13 digs.
  • Carli Pigza followed with 11 kills.
  • Carly Sosnowski paced the defense with 23 digs while Gabby Gray added 17 digs.
  • Elise Carmichael handed out 26 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The 19 kills for Lozano marks a career-high. Her previous high of 17 kills game during the 2016 season.
  • The double-double for Ward is her fifth of the season and Ricker's is her fourth of the season.

UP NEXT

  • King returns to the court on October 1 when they travel to Conference Carolinas foe Southern Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m.
  • Tusculum hosts Queens University on Friday night.
