BRISTOL, Tenn. – Casey Gilbert had a huge week for the Tornado in the circle, tossing three shutouts en route to a pair of weekly awards. On Tuesday, Gilbert was selected Tennessee Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week and Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week.
Gilbert went 4-0 in the circle for the Tornado last week, tossing three shutouts and allowing only two runs, one earned in 23 and one-thirds innings. For the week she posted a 0.30 ERA and opponents hit .200 against her in five appearances. She also played well offensively, hitting .333 with three runs batted in and four runs scored from the leadoff spot.
She started the week by striking out five in six innings as King took game two from Mars Hill. She then earned a win, tossing three innings in relief in King's 4-3 game one win over UVa-Wise. In the contest, she allowed only two hits and struck out three in three innings.
The Hendersonville, N.C., native then closed the week with a pair of shutouts, giving King Conference Carolinas wins at Barton College and the University of Mount Olive. Gilbert tossed seven innings and allowed five hits and struck out five in a 6-0 win at Barton on Saturday and followed that with seven innings, only giving up four hits in a 1-0 win at Mount Olive.
This marks the first time Gilbert has been selected pitcher of the week by either organization.
The Tornado return to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Erskine College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
