King defeats Tusculum in four sets

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team won their second straight match in as many nights on Friday when they defeated Tusculum University. The Tornado offense came out hot winning the first set, but had to fight back to defeat the Pioneers 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • A Diego Marcano kill started a 7-1 run that broke a tie and four. Marcano later had an ace on the run that forced a Tusculum timeout with King leading 10-5.
  • The Tornado held that lead and a block from Joshua Kim and Jack Sarnowski forced the Pioneers to take the second timeout with King leading 20-14.
  • Marcano gave King the 25-17 win with his fifth kill of the set while King hit .435 in the opening frame.

Second Set

  • The Tornado and Pioneers went back-and-forth in the second set before Tusculum opened up a 16-13 lead following a 5-2 spurt.
  • King tried to fight back, but couldn't get back to even as Tusculum took the set 25-22.

Third Set

  • A Marcano kill gave King a 14-10 lead in the third set before the Pioneers came back.
  • Tusculum scored five straight points to take the lead and force a King timeout.
  • The Pioneers led 21-18 before three straight King points evened the set.
  • Out of the break, King scored three more points, the final two on a block from Douglas Florencio and a kill from Sean Kohlhase as the Pioneers took their second timeout of the set.
  • Following two Tusculum points, Kohlhase came up with his fifth kill of the set to give King the 25-23 win.

Fourth Set

  • The Tornado broke a tie at 13 with four straight points, started by a Kohlhase kill and block from Kim and Suetonius Harris as Tusculum called for a timeout.
  • Tusculum took their second timeout as JT Deppe came up with his lone kill of the match to give King a 21-15 lead.
  • Kohlhase later ended the match with a kill, giving King the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Marcano led King with 17 kills and added eight digs and three blocks.
  • Kohlhase followed with 12 kills and five digs.
  • Harris chipped in with nine kills, five digs and three blocks while Kim added six kills and four blocks.
  • Sarnowski handed out 28 assists while Deppe accounted for 11 helpers.

FOR THE FOES

  • Shaun Kamshoff and Matteo Miselli led Tusculum with 15 kills each. Kampshoff added nine digs.
  • Lucas Blanco handed out 33 assists.

UP NEXT

  • King travels to Belmont Abbey College on March 14. First serve from Belmont, N.C. is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
  • Tusculum travels to Bluefield College on Tuesday.
