King drops match at #15 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing their third ranked team in five matches, the King University men's volleyball team fell at 15th-ranked Ohio State University on Friday night. The Tornado played the Buckeyes close, but ultimately fell 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • The Tornado came out and went toe-to-toe with the Buckeyes in the early going on kills from Sean Kohlhase and Suetonius Harris.
  • However, Ohio State scored three straight points to gain separation and take a 6-3 lead.
  • The Buckeye lead grew to as many as five twice, the second time at 13-8 before back-to-back Tornado points.
  • King stayed close, but Ohio State answered every Tornado point as a Julian Young ace pulled King within 21-19.
  • The Buckeyes then scored the final four points to take the set 25-19.

Second Set

  • Ohio State jumped out to a 5-1 lead early before a pair of Harris kills pulled the Tornado within 6-3.
  • However, the Buckeyes then rolled off five straight points to take control of the set.
  • King was never able to recover as Ohio State took a 2-0 lead with the 25-11 victory.

Third Set

  • The third set may have been the tightest of the match as the teams traded points in the early going.
  • In the middle of the set, a Harris kill evened the score for the 10th time in the third set before a Radek Bryja solo block and kill gave King a 15-13 advantage.
  • King extended their lead to 17-14 following a Diego Marcano kill that forced an Ohio State timeout.
  • However, the Buckeyes came back with three straight points to even the score at 17 before the teams traded blows again.
  • King then called for timeout as Ohio State scored three consecutive points, taking a 20-18 lead.
  • The Buckeyes continued the run, closing the match on an 11-3 spurt to take the final set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led King with seven kills while Marcano followed with six and Kohlhase added five terminations.
  • JT Deppe handed out 19 assists and added six digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Reese Devilbiss led Ohio State with nine kills.
  • Samuel Clark followed with six kills and four blocks.
  • Michael Wright handed out 19 assists and added seven digs.

UP NEXT

  • King returns home to face top-ranked University of Hawai'i on Tuesday night. First serve from the Student Center Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
  • Ohio State takes on the University of Southern California on Friday at Penn State University.
