Tornado take 2nd at season-opening King Invite

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The King University men's swimming team opened the season with a successful meet at the King Invitational. The Tornado were led by good swims from Jan Kuljak and Dale Bruce.

  • The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Bruce, Ethan DeRouis, Drew Snider and Maximillian Thomas started the meet with a time of 1:30.28 to take fifth.
  • Kuljak finished sixth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.58.
  • In the 200 yard individual medley, Bruce came in with a time of 2:03.86 to take seventh while Jabari Ramsey finished eighth in 2:05.04.
  • Snider wasn't far behind either, touching the wall in 2:07.49 to take 12th.
  • Thomas finished 11th in the 50 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 22.50 seconds.
  • The 400 yard medley relay team of Thomas, Ramsey, Bruce and Kuljak finished fifth with a time of 3:42.97.
  • Magdas finished eighth in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:35.63.
  • In the 100 yard breaststroke, Ramsey touched the wall in 1:03.19, taking eighth.
  • Efren Martinez wasn't far behind Ramsey, taking 12th in 1:04.10.
  • Bruce came in sixth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 53.77 seconds.
  • In the 200 yard freestyle, Kuljak finished in 1:49.45 to take sixth.
  • Thomas came in eighth in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.87 seconds.
  • Kuljak then came in third in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:40.30.
  • In the 100 yard freestyle, Kuljak finished seventh with a time of 49.51 seconds.
  • Martinez finished eighth in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.37 while Snider touched the wall in 2:21.88 to take ninth.
  • In the 200 yard butterfly, Bruce came in fourth with a time of 2:03.40.


"I would like to thank all the swimmers, coaches, officials, and volunteers for making the first King Invitational a success," King head coach James Graves said. "Our swimmers competed hard and showed great sportsmanship despite a grueling schedule for the first meet of the year. We had some strong early season swims and I am excited to get back to the pool and work on some things. We have a ways to go to become a true team, but this was a good first step."


  • King is in action again on Saturday at Converse College where they will take on Emmanuel College.
