Helbig, Valdes selected Conference Carolinas

All-Conference Carolinas Selections

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Between games on Thursday night at the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship, the league announced their All-Conference Carolinas honorees. Tony Valdes and George Helbig of the King University baseball team both earned second team all-conference recognition.

Valdes had a great senior season, earning all-conference honors for the first time in his career. The Miami, Fla., native led the Tornado ranking 12th in the league with a .348. He also ranked sixth in the conference with 14 doubles and three triples. That resulted in a .638 slugging percentage, which ranked him seventh in the league. Valdes ranked fourth in the conference with 30 walks and third with an on base percentage of .484.

Among Tornado, Valdes ranked third with 12 multiple-hit games, six with two hits and six with three hits. He also drove in three runs in a game three times, and had a total of four multiple-RBI games. Valdes ended his career on a 10-game hitting streak.

Helbig was stolid on the mound all season for the Tornado and earns all-conference honors for the first time in his career. The senior went 5-2, ranking seventh in the league in wins and 10th with a 3.80 ERA. He also tossed 71 innings, ranking him fifth in the league while his two complete games was fifth in the conference.

He tossed back-to-back complete games, first falling to fifth-ranked North Greenville University 4-3. In the game he allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out five. He followed that with a 5-2 win over Erskine on Senior Day where he only allowed two unearned runs on five hits in nine innings. The Davie, Fla., native closed his career with a season-high eight strikeouts at Limestone.
