Hot bats push King past the Cavaliers

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team were in action again on Sunday in what was a cold and rainy day. After falling down early 4-0 the Tornado were able to battle back and take the victory 10-8.

  • Tony Valdes went 3-for-3 with a double and a two-run home run.
  • Rob Sari went 2-for-4 with his first career home run.
  • Joe Cottone pitched 2.0 innings with four strikeouts and collected his first win.


  • The Cavaliers struck first blood in the top of the first scoring four runs on a couple of walks and a pair of doubles.
  • King would answer in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly from Austin Myer and an RBI double from Junior Renwick cut the Cavalier lead in half 2-4.
  • Uva-Wise added another run in the top of the second but the Tornado would end up tying the game at 5 in the bottom half of the inning coming off two home runs, a solo shot from Trader Flora and a two-run home run from Valdes.
  • The Cavaliers answered again in the top of the third taking advantage of a Tornado error to extend the inning and score two runs taking the lead 7-5.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth the Tornado offense would rally and score three runs with Valdes driving in a run with a single up the middle, and Rob Sari knocking a 2-run home run over the left centerfield fence taking the lead 8-7
  • After a scoreless fifth, UVa-Wise's Brock Smith would step up and hit an RBI double to tie the game back up at 8.
  • Flora would start the bottom half of the sixth with a double for the Tornado. With two runners on Kevin Barbato would step up and hit the first pitch he saw over the center fielders head to take the lead and eventually the game 10-8.

  • Tristan Peccerelli goes 2-for-3 on the day.
  • Smith goes 2-for-4 with three RBI on the day.


  • King returns to the field on Wednesday as they travel to Carson-Newman University, first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm.
  • UVa-Wise travels to Southern Wesleyan on February 15.
