King Takes Second at NWCA National Duals
Newcomer Krista Revelle won all three of her bouts through the weekend, wrestling in both the 136 and 143-pound weight classes in her first wins and matches of her collegiate career since joining King. She surrendered only two points in those three matches while posting two shut outs, including a technical fall in her debut match against Jamestown College's Serrina Smith.
Senior Emily Martin (109) also remained unbeaten over the weekend, posting a pair of victories on Sunday by a combined 16-1 score. The Frisco, Texas native defeated No. 5 Michiko Araki of Simon Fraser (6-0, 6-0) and OCU's Kristie Garr by decision, 1-0, 3-1.
King, ranked second by the WCWA, defeated No. 3 Simon Fraser by a 24-17 score. The Lady Tornado jumped out to a 16-3 lead through the five bouts. They continued amassing points with wins by Revelle and Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) to help seal the win. Ragan was bumped up to the 155-pound division and defeated No. 2 Jenna McLatchy after jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and followed with a 3-1 second period score. Shannon Constantine (Haverville, Ma.) defeated second-ranked Daphne Hodgson by pin in the first period to put King up quickly, 5-0.
With the win over Simon Fraser, the Lady Tornado advanced to the championship round against No. 1 Oklahoma City. King took a 6-5 lead over the Stars with wins from Emily Martin (109) and Samantha Klingel (116). Klingel, who possesses a number-two individual ranking by the WCWA, took the mat with No. 1 Joey Miller and beat her in a decisive 3-1 third period (0-2, 2-0, 3-1). The Stars responded by winning four of the next five bouts to regain the lead, 21-11. Wins by OCU's Kristie Davis and Brittany Delgado in the latter part of the match sent King to a second place finish in the tournament.
King will return to the mats at the Student Center Complex on Sunday, Jan. 15 for their final meet prior to the WCWA National Tournament (Jan. 28). They will host OCU and the University of the Cumberlands beginning at 9:00 a.m.
