SWU defense stymies Tornado

CENTRAL, S.C. – Following their conference opening win on Friday night, the King University women's volleyball team fell to Southern Wesleyan University in three sets on Saturday afternoon. The Warrior defense made it hard for the King offense to get going as Southern Wesleyan took the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The start of the first set was tight, but Southern Wesleyan used a 3-0 run to break an 11-11 tie and take a 14-11 advantage.
  • The Warriors opened up a 23-15 lead before King scored three straight points, the final two on a Cathy Scaniffe ace and kill.
  • However, Southern Wesleyan scored the final two points, taking the set 25-18.
  • Southern Wesleyan scored seven of the first eight points of the second set, gaining control.
  • The Warriors continued to extend their lead, eventually taking the 2-0 with a second set 25-12 victory.
  • In the third set, Southern Wesleyan broke a 5-5 tie with a 3-0 to take the lead.
  • However, King answered with a 6-2 run to take an 11-10 lead following a Scaniffe block.
  • Nevertheless, the Warriors responded with a 10-0, taking a commanding 20-11 lead.
  • King answered with a quick 3-0 spurt and later forced a Southern Wesleyan timeout with four straight points. Sydney Pigage pulled King within 23-19 with an ace forcing the timeout.
  • Out of the break, Tristyn Lozano registered a kill, cutting the Tornado deficit to 23-20.
  • Following a Warrior kill, King scored back-to-back points to pull within 24-22.
  • However, Southern Wesleyan scored the final point, taking the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
  • Scaniffe and Lozano led King with 10 kills apiece.
  • Abby Anderson handed out 24 assists to go along with six digs and Amy Serowski led the defense with 14 digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Paige O'Connor led the way for Southern Wesleyan, hitting .409 with 10 kills and four digs.
  • Annika Jones handed out 24 assists and added eight digs.
  • On the defensive side, Katie Anderson led the way with 14 digs.

UP NEXT

  • King stays on the road to face Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday. First serve from Belmont, N.C. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
  • Southern Wesleyan travels to Francis Marion University on Tuesday.
