Trojans End King Run with Three-Set Road Loss
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – King College Women's Volleyball had opportunities to win all three sets of their match against Mount Olive but could not close the door on the Trojans, leading to a 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 20-25) road loss, snapping a seven-match win streak on Friday night.
King (16-10, 10-5) battled with Mount Olive (14-13, 7-8) deep into the third game and had a 19-18 lead, down two games. The Trojans finished the match ending the third game with a 7-1 run en route to the win.
The Lady Tornado were one point away from victory in the second set before Carly White turned the tide with a pair of kills accounting for two of the next three Trojan points. King also had a pair of late leads in the first game, but Mount Olive again went on a late 5-1 run to close out the game, 25-22.
Ashley Pittman (Norris, Tenn.) led the Navy and Scarlett with 13 kills on 27 attempts (.333), also chipping in three digs. Sarah Van Goethem (Aurora, Colo.) went 9-for-24 (.250) against Mount Olive and was one of two players to have a team-high eight digs. Natalie Brown (Brentwood, Tenn.) was the second Lady Tornado to tally eight digs.
Mount Olive's Carly White hit at a .484 clip (18-for-31) to lead the Trojans offensively while also adding three of the team's six block assists. Four Trojan player hit .400 or better that had more than one kill attempt, good for a team hit percentage of .327 to rival King's .289.
King now begins a four-game home stand to end the regular season. Despite the loss, King remains in third place in the West Division by one-half game over Limestone College, who plays their next three contests against non-conference competition. All four of King's remaining games are against Conference Carolinas opponents, beginning Saturday (Oct. 29) versus Barton at 3:00 p.m. at the Student Complex Center. The Lady Tornado then conclude the season with home games against North Greenville, Converse and Erskine. King holds a 2-1 combined record against their next four opponents and have not played Barton yet in 2011.
