King gets 10th win of 2010 with 3-1 decision over VIC
BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College picked up a 3-1 victory in women's volleyball action Thursday against cross-town rival Virginia Intermont College as the Lady Tornado reached the 10-win plateau for the 2010 season.
The Lady Tornado took the opening set 25-19, but Virginia Intermont evened the score thanks to a 26-24 decision in set two. King then won 25-22 and 25-13 to finish off the match.
The victory sent King to 10-2 in 2010 and marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Lady Tornado have opened at 10-2 with the other two being last season and 2006. King also pushed a winning streak over Virginia Intermont to 19 since the start of the 2003 season. The visiting Lady Cobras went to 4-10 on the season.
In the opening game King fell behind 3-1 then reeled off seven straight points capped by a Morgan Machen (Kingsport, Tenn.) kill. From there the Lady Tornado led by at least four and as many as 10 down the stretch of the contest.
The second set was nip and tuck as neither team led by as many as two for the duration. The lead changed hands 22 times with King gaining a one-point lead 10 times. The set also featured 21 ties before back-to-back scores for Virginia Intermont to close out the set.
The Lady Tornado jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the third set, but Virginia Intermont tied things at 5-5. The Lady Cobras did cling to 11-10 and 12-11 leads before an 18-16 advantage, but King answered to force a 20-20 tie. From there King took advantage of Virginia Intermont errors for the set win.
The final set started with King leading 6-1 and the home team never led by fewer than three points en route to the victory.
A balanced attack was led by Machen and Kaitlyn Musick (Weber City, Va.) with 11 kills apiece. Ashley (Norris, Tenn.) added 10 kills.Pittman
Overall King had a .276 hitting percentage while Virginia Intermont's was at .109. Brandi Blessing had 14 kills to lead the Lady Cobras. Tori Starnes also gave the Lady Cobras 31 assists.
King returns to action Tuesday with a 6:30 contest at Milligan (Tenn.) College.
