Bamberger shoots King to second, Lady Tornado fourth after first round
VASS, N.C. - The King College men's golf team finished the first round of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Spring Invitational in second with a Tornado in second individually while the Lady Tornado owns fourth Monday.
Josh Bamberger (Waterloo, Canada) fired a two-over-par 74 Monday to lead King's charge and own second by himself. He starts Tuesday's final round five shots behind Belmont Abbey (N.C.) College's Peter Tarver Jones.
King got a 76 from Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) which has him fifth. Nick Carden (Hixson, Tenn.) used a 77 to share sixth while Tommy Ricker (Parrottsville, Tenn.) posted an 81.
The Tornado's team score of 308 has the squad a shot behind Belmont Abbey. Host St. Andrews was third with a 316 on the Par-72, 6,954-yard layout at the Woodlake Resort.
On the women's side Kirby Jones (Franklin, Tenn.) and Karissa King (Rockwood, Tenn.) both shot 96 in the opening round to share 12th. Malorie McBride (Brentwood, Tenn.) added a 98 with a 103 from Chelsea Gammon (Blountville, Tenn.).
King's 393 was good enough for fourth. Erskine (S.C.) College owns the team lead with a 350 which included a 79 from Janna Bontreger, the low round of the day.
The women played the Par-72 course at 5,943 yards. Limestone (S.C.) College's Ansley Smith was second individually with an 83. Coker (S.C.) College finished the day third with a 368.
