Lady Tornado Downed by Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Three King Tornado players hit double figures in scoring but could not overcome an early deficit created by the Carson-Newman Eagles on Wednesday night. King closed a gap of nearly 30 points to half that amount but in the end, Carson-Newman delivered King an 83-67 defeat at the Holt Fieldhouse.

Junior Mikki Oliver (Hampton, Tenn.) led all King scorers with 21 points and shot an incredible 72.7 percent from the field on 8-of-11 shooting and went 4-of-5 in three-point attempts. She also added a team-best six rebounds and an assist in 29 minutes played.

Freshman Alley Sprouse (Newport, Tenn.) and junior Brooke Johnson (Roan Mountain, Tenn.) each finished with 12 points apiece and each shot at or over 50 percent from the field. Sprouse went 5-for-7 from the floor and had five rebounds, three of those offensive boards. Johnson hit half of her eight shots from the field and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line in 28 minutes played.

King (0-3) played to a 44-31 score at the half, falling behind due to 13 turnovers resulting in 16 Carson-Newman points. King outscored the Eagles 18-10 in the final six minutes of the opening half, trimming the deficit  to 13 points going into the locker room. The Tornado shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes of play but only went 2-for-6 from behind the arc.

In the second half, the Tornado battled the Eagles throughout the second half, only being outscored by three points. Oliver scored 10 of her 21 points in the second half and all three shots made were from distance. The difference was made in second-chance points where Carson-Newman outscored King 25-8 in the category. The Eagles out rebounded the Tornado 43-29 with 19 of their rebounds being made on the offensive end.

King will return to the court and open with their first game against a Conference Carolinas opponent on Nov. 29 when they travel to Gaffney, S.C. to play the Limestone Saints. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Timken Center.
